2. <\/span><\/b>CONTENT<\/b><\/p>

The Project RECAT (project code: \u039a\u039c\u03a16-0084436) was implemented under the\nframework of the Action \u201cInvestment Plans of Innovation\u201d of the Operational Program\n\u201cCentral Macedonia 2014 2020\u201d, which is co-funded by the European Regional\nDevelopment Fund in a partnership agreement with Greece.<\/span><\/p>

RECAT aims at the development of an integrated methodology for the recovery of rare\nand high-value metals such as gold, platinum, tantalum and iridium, from rejected\nmedical material\/equipment and specifically from diagnostic catheters, diagnostic guide\nwires, and self-expanding stents.<\/span><\/p>

Within the framework of the project, a protocol for sorting, collecting and safely\ntransporting the waste material from the respective clinics of the Ippokrateio General\nHospital of Thessaloniki will be designed and tested in order to minimize the biological\n\nload and process the waste with industrial enrichment-pyrolysis and hydrometallurgy\nprocesses for the efficient recovery of the metallic part in a marketable form.\nThis investment project combines innovation and particularly high added value that is\nnot limited to the great importance of the final product but extends to limiting the cost of\nmedical waste treatment and its utilization.<\/p><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

3. <\/span><\/b>RESULTS<\/b><\/p>

The completion of the investment is expected to contribute simultaneously to the\ninactivation of hazardous waste and its utilization towards directly marketable products\nfrom very high-value critical raw materials while at the same time leading to the\nacquisition of know-how on a background of basic scientific knowledge and the adoption\nof circular economy methods by the collaborating entities.<\/span><\/p>
The final products of the project will include: (i) the recovered valuable components in\nthe form of metal or salts, (ii) the sorting and management protocol with the minimum\nbiological load of discarded catheters from the hospital unit and (iii) the benefit from the\nreduction of the volume of medical waste for sterilization.

In addition, the companies-beneficiaries of the aid will be recipients at the end of the\nproject of all the know-how that will be extracted from the pilot operation of the\nmanagement processes and the laboratory recovery devices, having at their disposal\nthe necessary information and experience for the expansion of the investments.\n\nThis investment will be promoted under conditions of minimizing the environmental \n<\/span>footprint and adopting a circular economy model in the processes that will be used and\n<\/span>in the waste that are produced.<\/span><\/p>

In addition to the technological plan of the investment, a side objective of the project is\nthe optimization of the disposal and sorting processes of the specific consumables after\nmedical use and, more generally, the instillation of a corresponding mentality in the\nmanagement of all medical waste from hospital units.<\/p><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
