Prevention of oil pollution on the coasts of the Municipality of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni due to the sinking of the oil tanker “AGIA ZONI II”

The Municipality of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni urgently requested the contribution of NORTH AEGEAN SLOPS S.A. in order to prevent the transfer of the oil pollution into the coasts and beaches of its jurisdiction due to the sinking of the ship “AGIA ZONI II”.

In this context, in the early hours of Thursday 14.09.2017, anti-pollution equipment, power boats, trucks, tankers trucks and specialized personnel of our company arrived at the beach of the former camping of Voula.

Immediately, a floating oil boom of about three kilometers length started to be deployed from the edge of Pounta peninsula (PIKPA peninsula) heading south to Aegina island.

As a result, diffuse oil patches and floating oil agglomerates were trapped by the boom and, next, by means of absorbent materials and special vessels are systematically collected.

Thanks to the in-time deployment of the oil booms, the oil pollution didn’t reach the specified coasts of the Municipality, allowing the citizens to use the beaches of the area, while coasts and beaches of neighboring municipalities had already suffered significant ecological and economic disaster.

Means and staff of our company work every day and remain in full availability in order to monitor and control the evolution of the oil pollution, until the risk is finally removed.

It is worth noting that the whole project of our company has an innovative, for the Hellenic level, character and practice, given that the length of the deployed oil boom is the largest one used so far for oil pollution prevention.

NORTH AEGEAN SLOPS S.A. has once again demonstrated that it is one of the leading Greek companies in this field, with modern means and trained personnel, who can deal with all types of marine pollution accidents in a prompt and effective manner.
